Want to know who Jesus is? Read this verse carefully and prayerfully.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1:1-5 NKJV.
Something always happens as we open ourselves to God’s presence, asking Him to speak. God reveals Himself to us through His Word – the Word.
The Gospel of John contains a depth of meaning that even if we studied it verse by verse and passage by passage, we could not comprehend its whole spiritual meaning. These first five powerful verses describe who Jesus is and why He came. We’re introduced to Christ Jesus as the eternal Word, Creator, Life-Giver, and Light.
The Eternal Word
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
Jesus, the Son of God, is preexistent to creation. He is the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. Before the world began, the Word was already there with God and was God. The Word was, always is, and always will be eternal.
Echoes of the Holy have emanated throughout heaven and earth from the beginning. The echoes became flesh and dwelt among us. Immanuel is the unique and personal revelation of God given to humankind.
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right had of the Majesty on High. Heb 1:1-3 NKJV
Jewish and Gentile Understanding
John was writing to both Jewish and Gentile believers. A Jew knew that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth through the power of His word, while a Gentile did not. So the Holy Spirit used John to help them understand.
The Greeks thought Logos (word) was a rational, impersonal force bringing order to the cosmos (world and universe). They didn’t know that this force had a name—Logos is God, rational and personal, not just a force. Logos is God’s mind, organizing, sustaining, and caring for His creation and everything in it.
- The stars and planets keep their course
- Tides ebb and flow
- Day and night have an unaltered order
- Seasons come and go at their appointed time
The Logos
Jesus is the Logos – the mind of God became a person. God’s creating, illuminating, controlling, and sustaining mind is real and came in the person of Christ. Word implies communication and revelation. The eternal Son of God is the Word – the fullest expression of God to humankind.
The Word is of the same mind, heart, and being of God.
The cosmos, the universe, and the world owe their origin and existence to the creative mind, power, and word of God. Apart from the Word, existence is impossible. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made.
Creator and Life-Giver
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
Think about it. Not a single thing exists without Christ Jesus. Nothing. So, in Him is life!
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Col 1:15-17 NKJV.
Life is the opposite of destruction, condemnation, and death. To live beyond death requires resurrection. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life. The only alternative, apart from Christ, is death – eternal death.
The “Christless” merely exist, but those who belong to Christ really live. Jesus is the only one who makes life worth living. The quality of life in Christ is good and eternal, while the quality of life without Him is tragic and heartbreaking.
Here’s the beauty of the gospel: Christ came to give life and give it more abundantly.
Jesus is not only the Word and Life; He is also the light that shines in the darkness, like a light beam penetrating the dark.
The Light
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it
We no longer need to fear the dark.
Darkness is hostile to the light. But the Light extinguishes it. Where the light is, there is life. Sin loves darkness and hates the light. The unconquerable Light defeats the hostile dark.
Those who live in sin fear the light.
The Christless life is a life in the dark. They have something to hide and prefer the dark. But it is impossible to hide as God’s searchlight sweeps the shadows away and illuminates the truth.
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they may have been done in God. John 3:19-21 NKJV.
In Conclusion
There has always been a deep and intimate connection between Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit. They are One. Jesus, our Lord and Savior, is the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us. In Him, we discover God’s expression and revelation. He’s not just a walking witness, but the light shining in the darkness, leading us to Himself.
Who else can show us what God is like, His will for us, and His enduring love if not the Word? The heart and mind of God are found in the Word. You see, hear, and know God when you read that Jesus is at the well with the Samaritan woman.
The Word is the same mind, heart, and being as God.
The next time you open God’s Word, hesitate in the holy hush. You belong to the Lord. The Word is with you – as near as the breath you breathe and as close as the beating of your heart.
For you are a chosen generation… His own special people, that you may proclaim the praise of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. I Pet 2:9 NKJV.
May the Lord bless and keep you and give you peace,
